What Distracts You?

There are cell phones,
text-messaging,
a pretty or handsome face
when least expected.

WHAT DISTRACTS YOU?

The phone rings in the middle of
revisions of CHAPTER TEN.
Do you answer or finish?
My apologies for no recent posts, but

I'VE BEEN DISTRACTED.

My toughest crit partner is ill.
When I write, she sits on my lap and checks out
what comes up on the screen. If she doesn't like it,
she says not a word. No complaints, no arguments.
She merely gets up, walks across the keyboard
a few times and rewrites the chapter for me.

And there you have it, a rewrite worth its weight.
But at the moment, I'm distracted. My
crit partner is ill and I might not have an
entry for a few days.

SOME DISTRACTIONS ARE WORTH THE EFFORT...
How about letting us know what distracts you?
What can make you turn your back on the
killer hiding in the corner, your heroine's life in his hands????

  1. My own brain distracts me more than I'd like to admit. I get daydreaming and it can go anywhere from there. :O)

  2. I have to agree. Gotta pay the bills. Laundry's in the dryer-errgh-no time to fold it. What for dinner? Will the boss need an extra read on So and So's story? And on and on. You're right, it doesn't take much to become distracted.

  3. Right now, everythign distracts me. I really need to work on discipline, but I think a lot of it has to do with the weather. Tired of cold, snow, etc. I need to be outside and be re-energized.

  5. Love that last line, Linda! I hope she gets better too.
My kids distract me from bloggging, and I let them, but when I'm writing or editing I usually do NOT answer the phone. :-) And I do those things at night. Sometimes I let hubby distract me....*grin*

  7. Lindsey, it will only get worse. I used to crave hot fudge ice cream cakes from A&W when I was bloated-oops-expecting Brandy. I FEEL your pain, sister. Hehe, hope all's going well.

  8. Linda,

I'm sorry to hear about your critique partner. How is she doing?

Distractions? Have mercy! They're everywhere. My two grandsons (4 and 6) walk in smack-dab in the middle of my writing of the end-or-chapter hook and say, "Gram'ma, will you read a book to us?" What do you suppose I say? My 13-month-old granddaughter who just learned to toddle toddles through the door, smiles broadly so that her dark eyes flash, waves, and says, "Hi!" What do you suppose I do? The sun shines and the thermometer reads 57 degrees. What do you suppose I do? A writer friend who maintains a neat blog asks a provocative question. What do you suppose I do? [sigh] Back to work!

    Write on!

    Because of Christ,
    Sharon

  9. Facebook and my blog are huge distractions for me. But they're both necessary for writers to network with other writers, and eventually with readers. So I try to look for a balance (which doesn't always work so well--but I keep trying).

  11. What distracts me? Husband, son, phone, dinner, Facebook, blogs, forums, and any chocolate that happens to saunter past. My hubby and son will ignore me all day, but let me close my study door to get down to some serious writing, and suddenly, they need me. I came up with a sign to post on my door: I still love you but I'm writing! Don't Knock!
