What keeps you writing?

“Thanks for considering me to represent your novel, but I’ll have to pass:

I have a similar project.

I don’t handle this genre.

I don’t like your name.

I think this stinks.

I can’t handle fantasy. Don't get it.

Your grammar is juvenile.

Too much telling not enough showing.”

And on, and on, and on. Blah, blah, blah.

So what keeps you writing? Submitting? Fine-tuning?

Hope. Hope that one day an agent or editor will be the right place at the right time and you’ll have your work validated.

Don’t ever give up!

It only takes that one person to welcome a full read of your work and to like it.

Your contract could be right around the corner!

  1. I keep writing because I can't stop the flow of ideas that enter my mind. Inspiration is everywhere, and I love it. I didn't believe in myself as a writer for far too long, and now I live with the regret of listening to someone else's dream crushing mouth. I know that not everyone will like my writing, which is only fair since I don't like every author's writing either. I know being an indie writer makes it hard to be found, but I also know that I'm doing something I love and it makes me happy. Every moment I can spend time writing an adventure that I created is one more moment that I am smiling. God blessed me with this talent and I will not give up on my dream ever again. :) What keeps you writing?

  2. Nice, Amanda, and such a great attitude to keep pushing forward. You're spot on. Not everyone will like what we write, so we keep striving toward finding those who do. I love your stick to it!

  3. Thanks for the encouraging advice, Linda! As to what keeps me writing, I have this crazy idea that if I keep at it I'll be on the NY Times Bestseller list someday. ;) Crazy?--maybe. But it keeps me going.

  4. Thanks for the encouragement today, Linda.

Way to go Amanda! Anne, keep dreaming. You can do it.

When we had our "dream" home stolen from us by an unscrupulous builder weeks before we were to move in, I packed my writing books away and took on a second job that paid well. I went to work and dug into the Psalms. The dream never left me though. A couple of years later, I felt God nudge me. I pulled the writing books out of the attic and waded back into writing. Sometimes I have doubts and wonder if God only has me writing to encourage others. But until he tells me to stop, I'll continue to write stories that I hope honor him.
