  1. you don't have to enter me, but I can't resist talking about Gone with the Wind! *heart fluttering* Actually, one of the most poignant scenes for me was after the battle of Gettysburg when Scarlett and Melanie are checking the casualty lists and Melanie comforts the Meades. The younger son expresses his grief for his older brother's death by declaring that he will enlist--I read it first as a teenager, and that young man just captured my heart, even though he only had a tiny scene. That has always stuck with me.
Such a great book! (and movie)

  2. Oh GWTW has to be one of my favorites. Both characters are so stinkin' flawed the whole plot shouldn't have worked, but it feeds on the very messed up traits that doom the two characters. Aside from the KISS, my favorite scene is the "morning after." Scarlet is bubbly and carefree like a googly-eyed teenager. She views Rhett's treatment of her as devotion. He, burdened with the guilt of his demands, leaves. Romance dashed on the rocks, yet again. Marji.Laine (at) gmail (dot) com

  3. Oh, yes, one of mine as well. And I've even come up with an ending in my bizarre imagination and yes, my dear, he
does give...darn. He cares, they live happily ever after.

  4. My favorite scene from the GWTW RHETT and SCARLET saga is when Rhett brings Ashley home and they pretend to be drunk. After the U.S. Marshall leaves, Rhett says, "Get him to the bedroom." Ashley says, "I can do it myself" (or something to that effect.) Rhett replies, "Yes, but is it worth the effort?" I've quoted that scene in some of my writing and speaking - as a stubborn, independent but physically challenged person myself, I've felt like Ashley so many times - "I can do it myself." Rhett's challenge is so good - some things are not worth the effort -why not save our strength for what is truly important. Oh! One more? The scene between Melody and Bell - Melody is so awesome! She truly believes in Scarlet when no one else will. And she's so accepting of Bell too. Her unwavering belief in Scarlet keeps us watching because we have to believe, like Melody, that there is something redemptive in poor, dear Scarlet.

  5. Melanie! Not Melody! Sorry about that! :)

  6. You are so right. And I adore Belle. She probably has the kindest heart next to Melanie. Yes, both very powerful scenes. And when Dr. Meades' wife asks him if the brothel is as amazing as she thinks and he tells her to mind herself. Love that part. We are alway titillated by what we "think" goes on where we'd never go. Loved that scene, oh you're so right. And I do have your email addy and will enter it. HEY EVERYBODY BE SURE AND PUT IN YOUR EMAIL ADDYS!!!!

  7. I had a tough time with Gone with the Wind. I read the book and finished it thinking, "Really? Where's my happy ending?" Then, I realized we aren't promised a happy ending. We need to be who God created us to be, and then seek forgiveness from those we hurt along the way. :) I am glad I read it, but my heart breaks for Scarlet and Rhett!

  8. Mine, too, Joi, but I'm one of those who makes up the happy ending. I didn't care for whoever wrote the continuation, didn't feel she had a grasp of the Mitchell's characters, but like I said, they did live happily ever after in cyberland...

  10. Oh, the morning after is a beautiful. For those who haven't read the KISS, it's memorable:

He was muttering things she did not hear, his lips were evoking feelings never felt before. She was darkness and he was darkness and there had never been anything before this time, only darkness and his lips upon her. She tried to speak and his mouth was over her again. Suddenly she had a wild thrill such as she had never known; joy, fear, madness, excitement, surrender to arms that were too strong, lips too bruising, fate that moved too fast. For the first time in her life she had met someone, something stronger than she, someone she could neither bully nor break, someone who was bully and breaking her. Somehow, her arms were around his neck and her lips trembling beneath his and they were going up, up into the darkness again, a darkness that was soft and swirling and all enveloping. --exerpt from Margaret Mitchell's GWTW

  11. True confession: I read GWTW when I was in 8th grade and couldn't put it down, which meant I read it through the night. Unfortunately, the next day was a school day and I told my mom I didn't feel well enough to go to school which was true, but. . .

There are so many scenes that elicit a feeling - be it frustration, empathy, or whatever. I think the casting was terrific and they all did a superb job bringing the book to life, though I wish it followed the book better but, oh well. The character of Melanie is my favorite. Wouldn't we all like to be wise yet unblemished by the harsh world we live in? The ending undoes me. I just want to shake the two of them and tell them to listen to each other - it doesn't have to end this way. But there's a lesson even in its ending - some answers we will never have this side of heaven.

I sure wish Margaret Mitchell hadn't destroyed the other novel she wrote.

  13. In the movie, I love the proposal scene. Scarlett whose been married and widowed twice at this point is being told she's never really been kissed and to try a husband of the right age. Hubba Hubba Rhett.

  15. I will be honest, I never watched the movie. I've seen bits and pieces here and there. I know the two main characters. Rhett Butler played by Clark Gable and Scarlett O'Hara played by Vivien Leigh. I know the famous line, "Frankly Darlin' I don't give a d___." Other than that I know that Scarlett does not end up with Rett Buttler because by the end of the movie he is tired of her antics or something like that.

  20. All these years, the line that has stayed with me is, "I don't know nothin' 'bout birthin' babies, Miss Scarlet!" Not very romantic, but boy, let's raise the stakes - at least for the next scene. One more hurdle for Scarlet who manages to get through. Fun post, Linda Happy Val-day! davalynnspencer at hotmail dot com

  21. It has been a long time since I watched the movie. I had mixed emotions about it and was truly disappointed when Rhett and Scarlet did not get together. I did love the scene where she vows to rebuild Tara - I also enjoyed the two they picked to play the mains parts of the movie - I think Rhett and Vivian did an exceptional job, but truly I would have liked more sweet romance and a better ending.

    Blessings,
    Lori

  22. I totally understand, we all want that happily ever after, but I think we saw the hope when Scarlett decided to return to Tara. She always drew her strength from Tara and once there, anything she set her mind to, she got. I think it's important to remember that because of the ending, MILLIONS of women and men have always wondered and that has been part of what has kept GWTW alive for so long. I think had they gotten together, there wouldn't have been as much hype. Let's face it, GWTW will live on long after all of us because of the primo writing and I think, partially at least, because of the ending.

  23. Gone With the Wind is one of my very favorite books. I love the scene where Scarlet sees Tara burned. It is so touching. Now it makes me want to watch the movie again! I always grew so frustrated with Scarlet talking about Ashley all the time.
    Happy Valentines Day!

  25. My most favorite, favorite love story ever! I read the book in high school (1978) and of course the book is always better than the movie. Scarlet & Rhett - opposites in every way - he wanted her - she wanted wimpy Ashley. I loved when she drank the perfume to hide her alchol breath. The second book written by another author - not even close! I'm in Nicaragua right now with my husband (we're missionaries) - would love to find your book when I get back to the states!

  27. I loved that they got Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable for the stars. They were great together! But, I got so frustrated that Scarlett couldn"t see past her friend's husband to see Rhett who loved her and wanted her. Don't blame him for getting disgusted with her. I loved the part where she determines to rebuild Tara. Bet she did too, and Rhett came back to find her too! I sure would love to win the Kindle. I can only use a book if it is print, unless it can come with PDF
